I feel confident claiming two things about our future as consumers of high-quality journalism: an increasing proportion of what we read will be paid for directly — subscription vs. advertising; and we’ll read it on our iPads, Galaxy tabs, and other digital devices more than we will on paper. Many (if not most) publications have specially designed apps that deliver content but the lack of standardisation can be jarring and tracking all of your separate subscriptions quickly becomes confusing. Since 2000 (so long ago that in the world of digital media that might as well read “815 BC”) Zinio has been offering subscriptions to licensed, digital version of popular magazines.
For December 2012 they have a special 50% off promotion on one-year subscriptions for a long list of titles. This discount bin is absolutely not full of unwanted seconds. For example, Consumer Reports, Billboard, and Popular Mechanics jumped out at me — and that’s all on the non-food side. Fellow gastronomes will be happy to options like Wine Access, Food Arts, and La Cucina Italian to their list.
Luckily, Zinio has given me a free subscription to try their service out. The only problem will be deciding how to use it. Bryan M. Wolfe of appadvice.com had a great piece that gives more details on how the Zinio app works.
Fellow cheapskates will agree that half-off is good but free is even better so I’m happy to be able to put nine Zinio subscriptions in the old prize van. With nine possible winners you have a great chance and compared to facing the mall at this point, I’d say this is an easy way to finish your gift shopping. If you win, you can choose from anywhere on the Zinio site, not just the 50% offers.
- Follow me and Zinio on Twitter and Tweet the following: If I win 1 of 9 free subscriptions from @ortdavid & @zinio I’ll be reading *MAGAZINE* Details: http://ow.ly/gepd6
- Like the Food With Legs Facebook page and leave a comment in the thread that introduces this post, telling me which Zinio-offered magazine you’d subscribe to.
If you enter by Twitter replace all of *MAGAZINE* with the name of your choice from the Zinio site. It’s fine if you eventually win and choose a different title. The contest will close at 5 PM EST on Friday December 21, 2012. Good luck!
