Both to mark the holiday season and to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their Carlton street location (in the old Maple Leaf Gardens), Loblaws and their President’s Choice brand have built a giant holiday gingerbread house.
The life-size house is made with edible gingerbread but only packaged candy decoration will actually be eaten–given the sanitary concerns related to life-sized children and their pint-sized hands. It’s located in the Canteen at the Gardens location and is decorated with over 700 pounds of candy.
It being December, Santa will be on hand (weekends only) for photo-taking duties ($5) with youngsters. Parents who want to give their kids a head start on the sugar high can put them to work decorating gingerbread men. Proceeds from the $2 fee for the decorating will go to support President’s Choice Children’s Charity.
To add a festive (and competitive) touch to the store’s anniversary celebration the first 400 customers inside after it opens at 7 AM tomorrow (November 30) will receive a slice of cake and an instant win prize that ranges from food merchandise to a $5,000 grand prize.
As well as getting to tour the giant gingerbread house we were also given an edible sample of the collected tips for holiday party appetisers from the President’s Choice culinary team. Highlights for me were the examples where standard dinner party fare had been made miniature. Potato roesti topped with smoked salmon; a new potato with sour cream and bacon as a smaller take on the jacket potato; and cold, rare roast beef with hot, small-size Yorkshire puddings were all hits.
